Buy Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator

I just brought this from Staples, and I brought this because of it's PRICE(relative to the HP 12C Platinum 25th Anniversary Edition) and from some reviews I've saw. Unfortunately, one of the other reviewers were right about the number buttons, they don't always work, OR the calculator's processor doesn't register them for some reason.

For example, i tried pressing a few random numbers with the relatively fast(try 100), most will display, but one will sneak in and not appear, no matter how you press it or from what angle you press. I also tried other numbers and it is the same. How ever if I enter it slowly, a one second of each other, it always works. I observed that repeating a number will have a higher frequency of not registering. (try 1100223344 fast)

What puts me off is that because the click of the button is so obvious, I would assume it will always register and not have a second thought of not pressing down enough. So this problem sticks out like a sore thumb. From the fact that all the buttons acted the same way, I'd have to guess it's a design flaw, plus i don't have time testing their products for them. I will return it and buy the HP 12C instead, of course not looking back.

We're talking about real money and a CFA exam at stake, I can't have something this risky missing a number in one of my lengthy calculations.

I love this calculator. I have not used HP Calculator but I have read Professor's notes in Schweser about how things will be different with HP Calculator. And you will realize that your life would have been just a lot easier with BA II Plus Calculator. Entire Schweser notes use BA II Plus and demonstrate the examples with BA II Plus keys. Buttons are a little tight but this could be just to avoid the unintentional press of a key.Get more detail about Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator.

First, it's a product review. (Shopping with Amazon has been a pleasure)

The design is cool and stylish, but don't be fooled by its appearance, cheap synthetic case too. (can't believe ppl say it is nice! it's not even napa leather) I pefered the hard case as it protects the on/off key. This calculator has turned on twice in my bag.

Very hard keys and slow registering, if you have fast fingers and like to enter numbers using both hands like me, then this is not for you. You have to press the numbers one by one slowly to have them registered, i used to work all my Fin. functions on a TI-83(no problem at all) which is not permited for the CFA exam.

I hated the Plus Pro after comparing this with the Regular Plus. This calculator slows me down for CFA exam practice problems and i had more than few errors cus of numbers not registering.

The manual and function algorithms are very good though, require min. learning curve. Calculation speed is faster than the Reg Plus's.Get more detail about Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator.

I tried this calculator and liked it, BUT, it's not solar. I had a Radio Shack 15 year old financial calculator that was incredible but finally display went after years of daily use. And IT was solar. Why have a calculator that you have to tape extra batteries to to use? And they are expensive if you use it on a daily basis and need to replace. Maybe TI is getting kickbacks from battery manufacturers. So...I went with Casio FC-200V financial. Does all the TI and more. And Casio is environmentally consious and uses this "new" technology called solar. Get more detail about Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator.

I really like this calculator. I am an accounting student and this calculator helps me perform many accounting problems quickly. During my exams it helps to have a calculator which is pre-programmed with many of the necessary ratios. The worksheets are also extremely helpful.

The buttons are a little stiff but that is not a con for me.

It is also a very beautiful electronic machine.

I plan to further my studies in the area of finance and many of the functions support that - it is CFA certified.

I just plain and simple love it.Get more detail about Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator.

I have had an HP-12C for a long, long time. When I recently wanted an extra calculator to supplement my HP-12C I decided to try something different. I had already picked up an HP-10B over the years (which I also loved), but I read on-line that the quality of that calculator had gone downhill, so I decided to save some money in comparison to the HP-12C and try an Texas Instruments BAII Plus. Bad idea. While it had good weight and a solid feel, I found I was constantly pressing numbers without them being entered unless I really concentrated (not that my particular calculator was defective, just the way the keys operate). Since accurate data entry is an absolute precondition to everything else, that flaw in the BAII Plus was fatal as far as I was concerned. Also, the interface on common functions was enough different from the HP-12C to require an substantial adjustment. So I went back to the HP-12C, this time the Platinum edition. The Platimum edition HP12-C had far improved speed from my old 12C, a backspace key and the ability to (if I were inclined) to change to algebraic number entry -- a different feel from old 12C but still solid keys and no data entry errors. So the BAII has been retired.

The TI BA II Plus is a first-rate piece of equipment. It performs all the basic financial functions. Additionally, it has a very simple interface, using a set of "worksheets" to perform the more complex financial functions. One needs to remember to exit the worksheet when finished, however, or the calculator will produce nonsense when computing products, sums, etc.
An additional plus: this is one of only a few calculators which are permitted for use on the Society of Actuaries exams. Get more detail about Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator.

I really like this calculator, but I somehow find the HP 12C Platinum edition better and more easy to use and navigate. I had a BA II and upgraded to do financial and estate planning calculations sans computer. Contrary to many reviews of the product, I liked the keyboard feel and didn't have any difficulty entering numbers. It has a solid feel and is easy to read. I did have to read the manual.

You can't just grab the calculator and add and divide. This is set up as a financial calculator and must be setup for arithmetic. A great intermediate calculator that will keep you going when the computers are down.Get more detail about Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator.

I have owned this calculator for about two months. I don't like it much. If I had to do it all over again I would spend more time considering the HP financial calculator.

The most annoying thing about this calculator is that the buttons are so hard to press. Sometimes, when I am entering many values and punching away at the calculator quickly, the buttons feel so resistant that it often misses some of my keystrokes. That forces me to press the buttons slowly to make sure that everything I press gets entered. I have not had this problem with other calculators. I haven't taken the exam I am studying for yet, but when I do, I hope this wont take up too much of time on exam day.

Also, in the CFA Level 1 curriculum, the annuity payment for an ordinary annuity is a positive number, represented by the variable A. But on the calculator, you have to enter the annuity payment as a negative number to get the correct result. Under most circumstances this wouldn't seem like a big deal but with so much to learn for the exam, this is something that I would rather not have to make a mental note of on exam day.

The calculator does have some positives. The best part of my experience so far has been with the statistical functions. All you have to do is enter the observed value for up to two random variables and it will display the mean, the population standard deviation and the sample standard deviation of both variables. It also stores these results so that you can manipulate them.

Another huge plus is the calculator's memory functions.

Finally, I am getting used to the cash flow functions and, up to now, have had a decent time with them. But, of course, using Excel is so much easier.

It probably also does correlation, but I don't know yet because I haven't needed to use that function yet.

Update 7/3/2008: If I had to write this review again, I would give it at least four stars. The more I studied for the exam, the more comfortable I became with the calculator. Referring back to the instructions from time to time was also extremely helpful. Finally, I ended up passing the exam using the calculator and was able to move through the questions rather quickly.Get more detail about Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator.

Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator Right now

This calculator looks nice and has great functionalities no doubt, but it's the worst key entry experience I've ever had with any calculators! The keys are simply too hard and one would need to exert a lot more force down on each of the keys for the input to register. As such, like many have complained in the previous posts, this makes calculation extremely slow, not because the calculator itself is not able to perform the task, but to punching in all your numbers would simply take too long and too much effort, with the added risk of not being able to enter everything correctly because the key pad is just so damn hard to press!

So frustrating! Why can't they just learn a thing or two from the casio fx series, once you've used those calculators you never want to touch another one again. Too bad casio doesn't make cfa approved calculators.

I'm starting to really really hate using this calculator.Get more detail about Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator.

The layout is like most traditional calculators, so if you've worked with other non-CFA certified calculators and/or are not accustomed to having to type additional keys ("Enter" on the HP equivalent) to perform a simple function, then I recommend this calculator. The buttons are sized correctly, the labelling is clear and the calculator itself is not heavy or overly bulky. The instructions are also clear. The only negative that prevents me from rating this five stars is that I have to depress the buttons a little harder than I am accustomed to. So if I'm typing a calculation fast, I need to make sure I press all the numbers enough so that they all appear on the screen. But overall excellent value at Amazon pricing. Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator Review

I needed this calculator for an exam involving calculating annuities. It took a few frustrating days to learn how to use it, but it really paid off during the exam. That being said, it's not great at regular mathematical calculations, I needed a scientific calculator for those. I love the rubber feet, but not the carrying case (it's just a pouch, buttons can be pressed through it, be careful if you carry it around in your backpack). I'm not so fond of the one-line display, or the way the buttons pressed. All in all, Amazon's price was less than half what I'd pay retail, and for what this calculator IS good at, it's indispensable.Get more detail about Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator.

great calc for any finance professional or student. the metallic buttons of BAII plus require more pressure than the plastic inputs on the TI-30xa (scientific), but this doesn't effect performance. this model is sleek and sturdy. it is worth paying the extra few dollars to upgrade from BAII plus basic to professional edition. This calculator came in handy in a pinch. Its best feature (besides that it comes up with correct calculations) is that the user manual makes it easy to use immediately. It's the friendliest user guide I've ever seen accompanying a calculator. It's a little annoying that it wants to display two decimal places always, but that's a setting you can change- however, when you reset input as you often have to do to start afresh with, for example, a new future value problem, it resets the whole thing back to double decimal places. But I can't live without it for accounting, overall. :)Get more detail about Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator.

Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator Right now

This is my first ever review of any product. I own a lot of calculators. Mostly HPs (12C, 10B, 48GX, 49G+, 50G), a few Casios, Sharps, other specialized types. This is my first TI and it is a real nice piece of work.

In a nutshell, this is one spectacular business calculator. It looks good, feature rich (I can't think of anything I would want that it doesn't have), interesting interface. A total winner.

I ordered on June 5, 2007. It arrived June 12th. About $35 w/free shipping. I won't compare it with the HP12C. Have had the 12C for a long time. Always loved it. Faster, slower? Po-tAto, Po-tato.

With all the good things about this calculator, there are just a few things I'd change or add to it.

There are three glaring flaws that I can't believe they forgot.

1) No equivalent to the "EEX" key on the 12C. Or at least a "000" key that allows entry of thousands, millions, ... with one button press. This is a very annoying ommission for me. Keying in 3, 6, or more zeros is a real pain in the arse. This is an absolute must have feature.

2) A calculator with trig functions and no "PI" key? Duh!

3) No slide off hard cover? Very, very bad move.

Maybe a two line display would be nice. But I won't lose any sleep over that.

The rest for me is just key placement. Moving from upper right to lower left for power and clear? These keys are nearly always near each other. The "CE/C" and back arrow key also on opposite extremes. They should be clustered closer together.

The on/off key should also be a shifted key to avoid accidentally keying it when unit's in a pocket, or by a stray key press when working. One should have to take deliberate action to turn the calculator on or off. Matter of fact, you should have to "hold" the shift key and press the on/off key to turn the unit off.

The unit should also have the option (in setup) of using "continuous memory" or not. [Meaning when you manually shut the unit off, it comes back on where you left it, rather than clearing]

So, I would move the backspace key up one and make the "on/off" shifted above it. Then I would move the "CE/C" key where the backspace key is now. Move the "CLR WORK" key with the "CE/C" key. Then all the clear keys would be together. Now, where should that "PI" key go? How about shifted above the square root key? Then I would move the reciprocal ("1/X") key to the shifted position and make that key either an "EEX" or "000" key.

Now there would be an extra key left where the "CE/C" key was in the lower left corner. How about a "TIME" key? This calculator is nice enough that it should know what the time and date are. Yes? Matter of fact, it should be one of those self setting atomic types! Maybe a timer too.

Does the equals ("=") key need to be two (2) keys high? No big deal either way. (But no, it doesn't! Move +, -, X, / down one! Hmm. Another extra key. Maybe that could be where the "EEX" could go.)

Last request would be in the display options. On most HP scientific calculators, there is something they call "engineering notation". Basically it is "scientific notation" but grouped in multiples of (3). You know, kilo (E3), mega (E6), giga (E9), ... Has no one thought that this is also "money notation" too? Thousands, Million, Billions, ... Like some annual reports list "(in Thousands)"? Once in awhile a body might want to display like that too (Maybe a letter in the "indicators" along the top could be used. The "T" and "M" in "COMPUTE" could indicate thousands and millions? The "B" in "BGN" for billions?)

For me, this calculator, with these few changes, would easily be the new "world standard" for business calculators. And the trig functions are a nice touch too.

CFA recomends this and another one which has a few features less. So, There was no point buying other models from a CFA point of view.
Couple of my friends did say that some of the features can be achived using the lower version itself, but needed a few extra key strokes.

But since the difference between the two was less, and I decided to be safe than sorry. If I did not use a feature then I dont lose anything , but If I need the feature and did not have it then I would be in trouble.

Also some books did use this calc for explaining how to use it, since I had the books, I bought the calc to go with them.
